Dean storms back toward the car ahead of me. I’m about to say something to him when he roughly opens the door and whips around to look back at me.

“Damn it, Emma,” he says angrily.

“What?” I ask.

“Can’t you ever just keep your mouth shut?”

“Excuse me?”

“Why did you have to do that?” he asks, shooting his arm out to the side to point toward the woods where we’d just encountered Jim and Genevieve.

“Do what?”

“Talk to him like that.”

“He was an ass, Dean. And did you not notice the way he was standing with his stepdaughter? That didn’t give you a creepy vibe at all?” I ask, surprised by his reaction to the whole situation.

“At that second, I wasn’t thinking about the way he was standing or if it seemed creepy. I’m here for a single reason, and that’s to try to find out what happened to Shawn Reichert. And part of that is going to the places he might have been. That guy was right. I’ve looked at notes from the initial investigations after he went missing. I don’t have access to the full records, but I know a lot of people around town were interviewed. The search was thorough.

“I didn’t know about the park, but there is mention of searching wooded areas and farmland. We need to be able to search these areas again, and you just managed to piss off the landowner so now he can completely block our access to it.”

“Are you seriously blaming me for this? You’re up against a missing person who might not be missing, and who, according to the vast majority of the people around here, didn’t even exist. I’m sorry I didn’t talk sweet and bat my eyelashes at the man so he would give us carte blanche to traipse around in the woods some more without any clear idea of what we’re looking for. But the reality is, you don’t know who we’re dealing with around here. Neither of us do,” I say.

“So guilty until proven innocent,” he says.

“Suspicious until proven trustworthy,” I counter. “You aren’t just looking for a random man, Dean. You keep saying his name, but you’re not thinking about who he actually is. The people in Cold Valley thought a man named Michael Forbes was visiting town for his own personal reasons and went missing. But you aren’t looking for Michael Forbes. You aren’t looking for someone who just disappeared when they were going about their normal course of life.

“You are looking for Shawn Reichert, an FBI agent involved in an undercover investigation into potential money laundering. That is extremely dangerous work. And it opens up far more possibilities. There’s a chance he was identified and had to go into hiding while evidence is gathered to protect himself. There’s a chance the people he was investigating got suspicious and neutralized the threat, so to speak. And, yes, there is a chance he just decided to walk the fuck away. The point is, in ten years there hasn’t been a single sign of him.
